About the place

The forest covers the hills on the west side of the city; tradition says the name comes from the three stream valleys (trei văi) that meet here. Ion Minulescu, Liviu Rebreanu and Vladimir Streinu used to walk its paths, and Alexandru Odobescu studied the hermitage in the mid-19th century. At the entrance from the city lies the landscaped park, with flowers and benches, and the city zoo, founded in 1950, is also in the forest.

Trivale Monastery, at Strada Trivale 71, has the Holy Trinity church. The first church, of wood, is said to date from the 15th century; the stone one was begun by Metropolitan Varlaam of Wallachia and finished in 1698, under Constantin Brâncoveanu. The bell tower dates from 1904, the church was entirely rebuilt at the end of the 20th century, and the old hermitage has been a monastery since 1990. Tradition says Michael the Brave's head rested here for a while on its way to Târgoviște.
