Why it's on the list

It is a tight canyon fitted with ladders and footbridges right beside the Transfăgărășan, easy to combine with the dam on the same day.

About the place

The canyon starts right off the Transfăgărășan, after two tunnels, at the northern end of a bridge. The loop, marked with a red dot, is about 9 km long with about 990 m of ascent: you climb about 2.5 km through the canyon on metal ladders, footbridges and cables, then cross the Călugărița meadow and come down via Vidraru Dam. It takes five to six and a half hours and is rated medium to hard.

In winter and after rain the canyon is dangerous: with snow and ice it is only for experienced hikers with winter gear. At the end of May 2026, the Argeș mountain rescue service brought out two hikers stuck in the canyon in the evening without torches or equipment.

Good to know

  • Start in the morning and take a head torch: the hike takes several hours and it gets dark early in the canyon.
  • In winter or on ice, do not go in without crampons and experience; in an emergency call 112 or Salvamont on 0725 826 668.
  • Bears have been seen in the area: walk in a group and talk loudly on the path.
