The Transfăgărășan follows its shore, with bays, bridges and places to stop by the water.
About the place
At its normal level the lake covers about 893 hectares, is 10.3 km long and up to 155 m deep near the dam. The Capra and Buda rivers, which form the Argeș, flow into it along with several streams. The Transfăgărășan follows the shore towards Cumpăna and Piscu Negru, and there are hotels, lodges and camping spots along the way.
From August 2025 to February 2026 the lake was drained for work on the power station, and it has been refilling since April 2026; Hidroelectrica said a return to the usual level could take more than a year. Boat and catamaran trips from the Posada Vidraru hotel's landing stage run only in the warm season and when the water level allows.
Good to know
- Stop only in car parks or wide lay-bys: stopping on bends is dangerous.
- For a boat trip, ask at the Posada Vidraru reception; outside the warm season there are usually no trips.
- Bears often come to the road and to picnic spots: do not feed them and keep food in the car.
