It is the hairpin climb you know from photos of the Transfăgărășan, with the Capra waterfall right by the road.
About the place
The Transfăgărășan was built between 1970 and 1974 and opened on 20 September 1974. On the south side, beyond Piscu Negru, the road climbs in hairpins up the Capra valley to the 887 m Capra–Bâlea tunnel under the Făgăraș ridge. The Capra waterfall, about 35 m high, is right next to the road. Beyond the tunnel lie Bâlea Lake and the Bâlea waterfall, in Sibiu county.
The high section is usually open only in summer: in 2026 it opened on 12 June, to daytime traffic only, and by early November 2026 it was closed again between kilometres 108 and 130+800. The closing date is no longer fixed but depends on the weather. In winter you can drive only as far as the Piscu Negru area.
Good to know
- From November until the summer opening, usually at the end of June, the section beyond Piscu Negru is closed: do not drive past the barrier.
- In summer, set off early: in the afternoon the road gets crowded and the weather turns quickly above 1,500 m.
- Bears often wait by the roadside: do not feed them, do not get out of the car near them and do not stop on the hairpins.
