The road runs right between the rock walls, which in places are more than 200 m high.
About the place
The gorge starts at the edge of Podu Dâmboviței and climbs north towards Dâmbovicioara village. The Piatra Craiului National Park administration gives about 2.4 km for the narrow part, and the county road DJ730 runs for roughly 5 km here. The valley was cut by surface water and underground water together, the latter flowing fast along faults, and the route alternates between limestone and conglomerate sections.
The gorge is part of Piatra Craiului National Park. The surrounding limestone holds more than 50 caves, among them the Dâmbovicioara Cave, north of the village. On Google the gorge holds 4.8 from about 1,400 reviews.
Good to know
- The road is narrow and busy at weekends: stop only at the wider spots along the edge.
- It is best on foot: from Podu Dâmboviței up to Dâmbovicioara village takes about an hour and a half along the roadside.
- In winter the walls keep the road in shade and ice can form: drive slowly.
