It was the first karst feature of its kind in Muntenia to be described in a scientific work, in 1767, and it can be visited all year, a few steps from the road.
About the place
The gallery is 3–4 m wide and 4–5 m high and narrows sharply after about 150 m; the temperature stays at 10–12 °C all year. The stream that carved it now flows in another bed, so the cave is dry. It has few calcite formations, but cave-bear bones were found inside. Locals knew it before 1579, when it is mentioned in a deed from the reign of Mihnea Turcitul, and in 1767 J. Fridvalszky described it in a scientific work.
The cave has had electric light since 1980, and the developed section, with a walkway and railings, is about 250 m long; a visit takes 15–20 minutes and is led by a local guide. Over the centuries villagers hid here from raiders, and a legend says two outlaws lived in it. On Google it holds 4.4 from about 7,600 reviews.
